This is my take on the Woody Guthrie classic. I sang this in grade school like everyone else in the USA, and made reference to it, and to Guthrie, in my song "Carolina." ("New York island, California, Woody Guthrie had it for you.")
This was my entry in a contest called "Cover an American Classic for Neil Young" contest (bit.ly/KnUkvk). It got the second-most number of votes.
This land is your land, this land is my land
from California to the New York City island
from the redwood forest to the gulf stream waters blue
This land was made for me and you
As I went that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
I saw below me where the golden valley lies
This land was made for you and me
Then the sun came shining and I was strolling
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds were rolling
and a voice was chanting as the fog lifted high
"This land was made for you and me."
Oh pretty baby won't you come with me?
leave all your worries here in the city
up to the mountains and out to the sea
this land was made for you and me
